The AU stands for African Union, which is an organization made up of 53 Member States around Africa. The African Union was originally called the Organization of African Unity (OAU) and was formed in1963. However, in September 1999, the government of the OAU called for the development of the AU, and a declaration was issued to this effect. The AU officially came into being on the 9th July 2002 and is headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
